Even if you’ve never listened to Eminem, you probably have an opinion about his music.
But no matter what you think about what he raps about, if you listen to his lyrics, you gotta admit he knows how to rap. His lyrics look like crap on paper, but his lyrics sound amazing on his CDs.
What’s his secret? Well, I was just read an article online that gives a tantalizing hint:
At first, [Eminem friend] Fields says, Eminem was just a smartass cracking inside jokes with Manix and his cronies. Before long, however, he said Eminem began teaching him what he called “the inside rhyme.” “At that time, if you had two lines that rhymed, that was it,” Fields says. “Marsh was putting it to the next level. He was trying to put as many words that rhymed into a line as he could fit.”
The inside rhyme. Pretty cool.
With this in mind, I listened to his latest CD and found inside rhymes everywhere. Take this excerpt from his current radio hit, Without Me (I’ve highlighted matching “inside rhymes” with matching backgrounds):
A visionary, vision of scary
Could start a revolution, pollutin the airwaves
A rebel, so just let me revel and bask
in the fact that I got everyone kissin my ass {*smak*}
And it’s a disaster, such a catastrophe
for you to see so damn much of my ass; you asked for me?
Well I’m back, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
{*bzzt*} Fix your damn antenna tune it in and then I’m gonna
enter in, in the front of your skin like a splinter
The center of attention, back for the winter
I’m interesting, the best thing since wrestling
Investing in your kid’s ears and nesting
{*bzzt*} Testing, attention please
Feel the tension, soon as someone mentions me
Here’s my ten cents, my two cents is free
A nuisance, who sent? You sent for me?
Compare this to a less talented rapper like Puff Daddy — I mean, P. Diddy — in his incredibly lame recent radio hit, I Need A Girl:
I had a girl that would’ve died for me
Didnt ‘preciate her so I made her cry for me
Every night she had tears in her eyes for me
Caught a case, shorty took the whole ride for me
At first we were friends then became lovers
You was more than my girl, we was like brothers
All night we would play fight under covers
Now you gone, can’t love you like I really wanna
But everytime I think about your pretty smile
And how we used to drive the whole city wild
Damn I wish you would’ve had my child
A pretty little girl wit Diddy’s style; this shit is wild.
Can you find a single inside rhyme? Except for the J. Lo references, P. Diddy offers no value for your CD dollar — especially musically. He can’t even master the outside rhyme; the first four lines quoted here all end in for me, he rhymes “wanna” with “covers”, and “smile” with “wild.”
We don’t often pick up on this stuff consciously, but I bet a big part of Eminem’s success comes from our subconscious paying attention to how Eminem raps. The man may not be polite, but he’s got mad skillz.

Bob speaks! All hail Bob.
I’ve never been a big fan of rap, and certainly not a big fan of Eminem, but you have to admire someone who excels at his craft. In my opinion, art without craft is not art. Or at least not good art.
Which is not to say I’m going to run out and buy his latest CD, mind you.
Great post! Just ran across this review of Public Enemy’s Welcome to the Terrordome, which makes reference to internal rhyme as well.
let’s give due props to sir mixalot, the real innovator here. (“my anaconda don’t want none unless it’s got buns hon”).
interesting point bob, but i must disagree with some of your points. It is indeed fascinating how Eminem cleverly weaves his rhymes, but i found that this novelty becomes catchy at first and afterwards one gets past the witty play on words and actually starts listening to the lyrics. Eminem glorifies himself through this song, he announces his “great” return to the music industry. On the other hand, P. Diddy, plays the role of a “ghetto minstrel,” if you may, he is telling a story about his past love, giving a part of his life to us through song. Compared content wise, i believe that P Diddy’s song is a bit superior. I must say though that Eminem is an amazing character. The Marshall Mather LP was an incredible album and im sure his latest CD will be just as successful.
I love Eminem, for both his music and for not caring how much controversy he makes.
Just some props. It’s funny. His is the only rap I’ll listen to. And now I understand why. Not because it means anything to me, or speaks to me about anything spiritual or meaningful at all, but because it SOUNDS GOOD. Brilliant. That Slim Shady’s smarter than we give him credit for.
Good post. I don’t care much for rap but believe it or not I really like Eminem. His songs are so catchy and you’re right the lyrics sound good. I really became hooked on him when I heard “Stan” and really listened to the words, powerful song.
dude…i commend you!!! i’m so glad there are other people like you that know what good rhythym and rhymes are!!! eminem is extraordinary while others just freakin suck great big donkey balls!!! and it’s so funny how eminem can do it all by himself…he doesn’t need 12 other people yelling “yo’, das right mudda fuckah” behind him- just plain sad! great piece!
hey, great post! I love Eminem in spite of what everyone says….
interesting…
Gooooooood point!!
dammit you’re right
Testing. Don’t mind me
Props for bein named Bob!
Ohhhh… so that’s why… Cool.
ah, are you the bob that is feared by the inhabitants of the bobfearing planet that arthur dent, the Sandwich Maker, crashlanded on? you ARE?
all hail bob.
even though i’m not a fan of eminem..i like it when people tell it like it is, makes me appreciate things…
Hi Bob. Thanks for subbing today. You seem like an old-schooler here…dunno why I’ve not seen you before (where’ve I been?!).
So, to the subject at hand. I have a real issue with Marshall Mathers. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Dre likes the kid (okay, Dre knows the kid can make money, but beyond that…). I really wanted to like him when I first heard him, but I just couldn’t stomach some of the attitude and such.
Also, I think he’s utilizing more than just the now apparent inside rhyme. He also seems to make good use of running triplets in the syllable structure (something that Snoop is the best at….he’s my favorite rapper, hands down.)
Good stuff. I look forward to reading you more and finding out what I’ve missed out on.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, the nanny is here, the little one is night night and me and the missus are about to go get into some trouble in town. ciao.
Jebus dude…..I just noticed the date on this post. Some sort of hiatus?
Okay, really gotta run now.
That was a fickin awesome post…dude you are so incredible…
Never really thought about it, but yeah, that’s why he sounds so much better than a lot of the othder rappers out there. Makes me want to go see 8-Mile.
its a good reveiw. it is clever how he weaves his rhymes.
but i still think rap sucks a fat cock.
death to rap
boo.
sars
you suck bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahahaha
lol I like listening to eminem too. But when I grow up I plan on pissing him off
thats the reason why I listen to eminem: He can rhyme 3 syllables with 3 different syllables for 9 lines. And for ICP you can say the opposite. I know the Insane Clown Posse can do better.
Actually, P. Diddy did rhyme in that song. “died for me”, “Cried for me”, “ride for me”, “eyes for me”. Those rhymed. Gotta look a little harder, bob. He rhymed “lovers” with “brothers” and “Covers”.
Still nothing compared to Eminem though.
Oh yeah, and Eminem rhymed “nuisance” with “two cent” and “who sent” and “you sent”. Just thought you should highlight those.
i love how eminems music sounds becuase of the interior rhyme scheme but i strongly dislike his messages in some of his songs. but great post
I DONT NO U!and u dont no me for that matter im 14 i live in pennsylvania n i was bored so i decided to check ne1 with the sn “bob” “fred”and “gray” u were second but gray was boring..n fred didnt have ne entries n i noticed u seem to like eminem?and u no alot about the human brain and my friend decided…ur my evil twin..just hella older and im officially disguisted/intrigued by u so if u ever notice this IM me
hmm, interesting. i can’t stand rap, and i never bother to listen to eminem’s lyrics, but that’s an interesting fact that you pointed out. pretty cool..
It’s spelled M&M’s you retards. And you dont listen to them you eat them. Bunch of Losers.
PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE POST. IT’S SO DANG TRUE* 1. At least 2 people in this world love you so much they would die for you. 2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way. 3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you. 4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don’t like you. 5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep. 6. You mean the world to someone. 7. If not for you, someone may not be living. 8. You are special and unique. 9. Someone that you don’t even know exists loves you. 10. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it. 11. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world. 12. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won’t get it, but if you believe in yourself, probably, sooner or later, you will get it. 13. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks. 14. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know. 15. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great. Add this as a comment to ten of your friends tonight and at midnight your true love will find you. Something good will happen to you at 2:25 tomorrow. Get ready for the biggest shock of your life. Whoever breaks this chain letter will be cursed with 10 relationship problems for the next ten years tag ur it!! this is so scary!!! send this to 15 ppl in the next 143 min. and then press F6 and your crushes name will appear in big letters!! it is so scary because it works…. but if you break the chain.. you will be cursed w/ relationship problems.
